Before booking the trip

  1. 1

    Confirm the marina

Los Cabos charters can leave from Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Los Cabos, or another launch point. The marina matters more than the town name.

  2. 2

    Arrange the early transfer

Boats often leave before normal breakfast or shuttle hours. Get a written pickup time and meeting point from the operator.

  3. 3

    Verify what is included

Ask about licenses, bait, food, drinks, fish processing, dock fees, tax, and gratuity. Packages differ by boat and operator.

  4. 4

    Build in weather flexibility

Wind and tropical systems can change offshore plans. Travel insurance and a spare day are worth considering.

Airport and ground transportation

Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) is the main air gateway. Cabo San Lucas Marina and Puerto Los Cabos are different departure areas, so confirm the exact marina, gate and boat name before arranging transportation.

Use an authorized airport operator, pre-arranged transfer or properly documented rental car. Confirm the total fare and currency in writing.

Lodging areas

Choose a base near the departure marina

Cabo San Lucas

The practical choice for early departures from the Cabo marina, with the widest mix of dining and nightlife nearby.

San José del Cabo

A quieter historic center with galleries and restaurants. Confirm drive time to the departure marina before booking.

The Tourist Corridor

Resorts and beaches between the two towns. Comfortable for mixed fishing-and-resort trips, but transfer time varies by property.

Practical checklist

Packing and local basics

Documents

Passport, entry records, insurance details, charter confirmation and offline copies.

Sun & spray

UPF layer, hat, polarized glasses, sunscreen, light shell and a small dry bag.

Health

Prescriptions and any motion-sickness product selected according to its label or a clinician's advice.

Fish transport

Check operator, airline and destination import rules before planning to fly with fish.

Local time

Baja California Sur uses UTC−7 year-round. Recheck the time when arriving from a region that changes clocks.

Drinking water

Use sealed or properly purified water and follow guidance from the accommodation or operator.

Personal safety

Review current travel advice, use licensed transportation, safeguard valuables and follow marina instructions.

Options for a non-fishing day

Land's End: See the Arch and coastal rock formations by authorized local boat or water taxi; conditions determine beach access.

San José Art District: Walk the historic center and galleries. Event schedules change seasonally, so verify before making a special trip.

Cabo Pulmo: A protected national park on the East Cape. Use permitted operators and follow the park's current access rules.

Whale season: The federal 2025–26 authorized Los Cabos season ran December 15–April 30. Future dates are published annually.
