Overview

Tiger Sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier) are among the largest and most powerful sharks in the ocean. Named for the dark vertical stripes on their back, they're solitary, wide-ranging predators found in tropical and subtropical waters worldwide. In Los Cabos, they're encountered occasionally by offshore anglers targeting other species.

Tiger Sharks are opportunistic feeders with an extremely varied diet; they've been known to eat fish, seals, birds, sea turtles, and even indigestible objects. While intimidating, Tiger Shark encounters in Cabo are rare, and they're not a targeted species for most sportfishing charters. When hooked, Tiger Sharks put on a display of raw power that can last for hours.

Physical Characteristics

Tiger Sharks have a robust body with a blunt snout and a large, crescent-shaped tail. Their distinctive tiger-like stripes fade as they mature. They have heavily serrated teeth designed for cutting through tough prey.

They're the second-largest predatory shark (after Great White), reaching lengths of 14-18 feet and weights exceeding 1,400 pounds.

Best Seasons

Tiger Sharks are most likely encountered in Los Cabos from June through November when water temperatures are warm. They're a warm-water species found in deep offshore waters, often near drop-offs, pinnacles, and areas with high baitfish concentrations. Encounters are uncommon; most Cabo anglers will never hook one, but they're a memorable experience when they happen.

Best Techniques

🎣 Heavy Offshore Gear80-130 lb class stand-up or bent-butt rod. 12/0+ circle hook. Live bonito or tuna as bait. Wire leader (300+ lb) required.
🎣 ChummingA chum slick of fish parts and blood can attract Tiger Sharks from a distance. Requires patience and heavy tackle.
⚠️

Important

Tiger Sharks should be released carefully. They're not targeted by charters; most encounters are incidental. If you hook a Tiger Shark, your captain will assess the situation and prioritize safety, the shark's well-being, and your gear. These are wild apex predators that deserve respect.

Conservation

⚠️

Important

Tiger Sharks are classified as Near Threatened globally. They're not specifically targeted in Los Cabos but are vulnerable to bycatch. Sharks are protected under Mexican regulations, and finning is strictly prohibited. Tiger Sharks grow slowly and produce few pups; responsible anglers always practice catch and release.

Encounter the Apex

Tiger Sharks are rare, but if you want to target big game, we can connect you with the right captain.
