Swordfish
The elusive broadbill. Swordfish are deep-water specialists that command respect from the most experienced anglers. Among the most prized and challenging catches in Cabo.
Overview
Broadbill Swordfish (Xiphias gladius) are one of the most prestigious catches in global sportfishing. Unlike the surface-oriented marlin and tuna, Swordfish are deep-water predators that spend their days in the depths (300-2,000 feet) and move shallower at night. This makes them a unique challenge that requires specialized techniques and serious tackle.
In Los Cabos, Swordfish are present year-round but are most commonly targeted in summer months when night fishing conditions are calmest. They're caught using specialized deep-drop techniques or, more recently, daytime deep-drop methods that have revolutionized Swordfish fishing worldwide.
Physical Characteristics
Instantly recognizable by their long, flat bill that resembles a sword (about one-third of the body length). They have a tall, crescent-shaped first dorsal fin and a large, powerful tail.
Unlike billfish, Swordfish lack scales and teeth in adults. Their meat is dense, steak-like, and highly prized, often commanding premium prices in restaurants worldwide (the name "swordfish" alone on a menu signals quality).
Best Seasons
Swordfish are available year-round in Los Cabos, but the best fishing is from May through October when water temperatures are warmest and the seas are calmest. Night fishing (sunset to midnight) targeting Swordfish that move into 100-300 feet of water is the traditional approach. Daytime deep-drop fishing in 1,000-2,000 feet of water has gained popularity and can be very productive. Calm sea conditions are essential; the Pacific side on a flat summer night is ideal.

Table Fare
Swordfish is among the most prized fish in the world for eating. The meat is dense, meaty, and steak-like with a mild, slightly sweet flavor. It's excellent grilled (brush with olive oil, season simply), broiled, or pan-seared. Unlike tuna, Swordfish holds together well on the grill and doesn't dry out quickly. It's also excellent smoked. When you catch a Swordfish in Cabo, local restaurants will prepare it, and it will be some of the best fish you've ever eaten.
