Overview

Skipjack Tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) are the workhorses of the Los Cabos fishing grounds. These smaller, fast-moving tuna are present in huge numbers year-round and serve multiple purposes: they're excellent light-tackle sport on their own, they're among the best live baits for marlin and large tuna, and they're surprisingly good eating when fresh.

Physical Identification

Skipjack are easily identified by the 4-6 dark horizontal stripes running along their silver belly (no other tuna has this pattern). They have a streamlined, torpedo-shaped body and a metallic blue-green back.

Role in the Ecosystem

Skipjack are a crucial link in the Cabo food chain. They school in massive numbers, feeding on small baitfish and squid, and are themselves the primary food source for marlin, large tuna, and wahoo. Their presence often signals the presence of larger predators nearby.

Best Seasons

Skipjack Tuna are available year-round in Los Cabos waters. They're one of the most abundant and reliable game fish in the region. If nothing else is biting, you can almost always find Skipjack, which makes them a great backup option for keeping the rods bent and the action going. They're particularly thick in summer and fall when water temperatures are warmest, but winter still produces plenty.

Note

Skipjack Tuna are among the most sustainable tuna species due to their fast growth and high reproductive rates. They're not overfished, and Mexican regulations allow reasonable harvest. Many Cabo charter boats catch Skipjack specifically for live bait; they're a critical part of the local fishing ecosystem.
