Overview

Sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) are among the most spectacular game fish in the ocean. Named for their enormous dorsal fin (the "sail") that stretches nearly the length of their body, they are built for speed and aerobatics. When hooked, Sailfish put on a show: launching themselves clear of the water, walking on their tails, and making breathtaking runs.

In Los Cabos, Sailfish are less common than Striped Marlin but are caught regularly during winter and spring months. They're typically encountered while trolling for marlin and are a welcome addition to any day on the water. Their lighter weight compared to marlin makes them an excellent target for lighter tackle.

Physical Characteristics

The sail-like dorsal fin runs nearly the entire length of the back and is spotted with black dots. Their body is deep blue to silver with iridescent hues. The upper jaw extends into a long, slender bill used to slash and stun prey.

Sailfish are the fastest fish in the ocean, capable of bursts over 68 mph. Their slender, streamlined body and crescent tail are perfectly adapted for explosive speed.

Best Seasons

Sailfish are most common in Los Cabos from November through May when water temperatures range from 68-78Β°F. They prefer cooler, clearer water and are often found near temperature breaks and current edges. The winter months (Dec-Feb) offer the most consistent Sailfish action, though they can be caught year-round in deeper water.

Catch & Release

Sailfish are protected under Mexican fishing regulations (one billfish per boat per day). All major Cabo tournaments use release formats. Their sportfishing value is far greater than their table quality; always release Sailfish. Your captain will use circle hooks and proper handling for a healthy release.
