Overview

Hammerhead Sharks (Sphyrna spp.) are among the most recognizable fish in the ocean, thanks to their distinctive T-shaped head or "cephalofoil." In Los Cabos, the most common species is the Scalloped Hammerhead (S. lewini), which is known for schooling in large numbers around offshore seamounts and banks. Seeing a school of Hammerheads is one of the most impressive sights in Baja fishing.

Hammerheads are found in both nearshore and offshore waters in Cabo. They're most common around the Gordo Banks and other offshore structure where they school by the hundreds. They're also encountered in the deep channels between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. Hammerheads are strong, agile fighters that make long, powerful runs.

Physical Characteristics

The hammer-shaped head (cephalofoil) is a highly specialized structure that provides 360-degree vertical vision and enhanced electroreception. Hammerheads can detect prey buried in the sand.

Three main species are found in Cabo: Scalloped Hammerhead (most common), Great Hammerhead (largest, up to 20 ft), and Smooth Hammerhead. Scalloped Hammerheads are known for their large schools.

Best Seasons

Hammerheads are most common in Los Cabos from June through November. They prefer warm water and are frequently found around the Gordo Banks, where schools of 100+ Hammerheads can be seen on sonar. They're less common in winter when water temperatures drop, but they can still be found in deeper water year-round. The best time of day is early morning when they're actively feeding.

Tip

The Gordo Banks are the most reliable spot for Hammerhead encounters. Talk to your captain about targeting them; many Cabo charter captains know exactly where the schools are holding. Hammerheads are spectacular catch-and-release fish. A school of Hammerheads on the surface is a sight you'll never forget.

Conservation

⚠️

Important

Hammerhead populations have declined significantly worldwide due to finning and bycatch. The Scalloped Hammerhead is listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN. In Mexican waters, Hammerheads are protected and must be released. Finning is illegal. Responsible anglers release Hammerheads quickly, using circle hooks and minimal handling. Never bring a Hammerhead aboard unless necessary for hook removal.
