Overview

Cabrilla (Epinephelus analogus), also known as Spotted Grouper or Cabrilla Pinta, is one of the most popular reef fish in Los Cabos. These colorful members of the grouper family are smaller than their deep-water cousins but make up for it with energetic fights and exceptional flavor. They're a favorite target for light-tackle anglers and spearfishermen.

Known locally as Cabrilla (Spanish for "little goat"), these fish are abundant in Los Cabos nearshore reefs and rocky areas. They're present year-round and provide consistent action when bottom fishing around structure. Their name in Mexico is often used broadly for various small grouper-like fish, but the Spotted Cabrilla is the most common species in Cabo waters.

Physical Characteristics

Cabrilla have a typical grouper shape (robust body, large mouth) but are more elongated than true groupers. They're reddish-brown to olive with distinctive white spots covering their body and fins.

Several species are called Cabrilla in Mexico, including the Spotted Cabrilla (E. analogus) and the Flag Cabrilla (E. labriformis). All are excellent eating.

Best Seasons

Cabrilla are present year-round in Los Cabos waters. They're most active during the warmer months (May through October) but can be caught in any season. They hold near rocky bottom structure, reefs, and artificial shelters at depths of 20-80 feet. They're less active during cold water upwelling events in winter but will still bite for patient anglers.

Tip

Cabrilla are not shy about hitting bait; they're aggressive feeders. If you're fishing near structure and feel a sharp tap-tap-tap on the bottom, it's likely a Cabrilla. Set the hook quickly before they steal your bait.

Table Fare

Cabrilla is one of the best-eating fish in Los Cabos. The meat is pure white, firm, and sweet with a delicate flake. It's similar to grouper but even more tender. Cabrilla is excellent grilled whole, pan-seared fillets, or in fish tacos. A whole fried Cabrilla with lime and salsa is a classic beachfront meal. Many local restaurants feature Cabrilla as a daily special when available.

Note

Cabrilla are abundant in Los Cabos waters and not considered overfished. Standard Mexican fishing regulations apply. They're a sustainable choice for table fare. Their relatively small size (typically 2-8 lbs) means they reach maturity quickly, supporting healthy populations.
