Overview

Bull Sharks (Carcharhinus leucas) are among the most formidable predators in Los Cabos waters. Known for their aggressive nature and ability to tolerate freshwater, Bull Sharks are the nearshore counterpart to the offshore Tiger Shark. They're found in the surf zone, around river mouths, estuaries, and nearshore reefs throughout Baja California Sur.

Bull Sharks are stocky, powerful, and unpredictable. They're considered one of the most dangerous shark species to humans due to their aggressive nature, nearshore habitat, and wide distribution. In Los Cabos, anglers occasionally encounter Bull Sharks while fishing in the surf or nearshore structure areas. They fight with relentless power, making short, violent runs.

Physical Characteristics

Bull Sharks have a stout, muscular body with a broad, flat snout and small eyes. They're gray on top and white below, with a distinctive blunt snout that gives them their name. Their dorsal fin is large and triangular.

Unlike most sharks, Bull Sharks can osmoregulate; they can swim from saltwater into freshwater rivers and lakes. Females are larger than males, reaching up to 11 feet.

Best Seasons

Bull Sharks are present year-round in Los Cabos waters. They're most active during warmer months (May through October) when water temperatures are above 75Β°F. They're commonly found in shallow nearshore waters, surf zones, and around the San Jose Estuary. Bull Sharks are opportunistic feeders and will hit a variety of baits and lures.

⚠️

Important

Bull Sharks are unpredictable and aggressive. They're not a typical target for Los Cabos charters. If you hook one, prioritize safety. Bull Sharks should be released quickly and carefully; their aggressive nature means they can be dangerous to handle. Always use heavy leaders to prevent bite-offs, and never bring a Bull Shark into the boat unless the captain determines it's safe.

Conservation

⚠️

Important

Bull Sharks are not currently endangered but face pressure from habitat loss and fishing. They're regulated under Mexican shark fishing laws. Bull Sharks are vital to nearshore ecosystems as apex predators. Catch and release is strongly recommended. Finning is illegal under Mexican and international law.
