Offshore Species
Striped marlin
Often emphasized in cooler-season planning. Release is preferred; Mexico's special billfish limit applies.
Blue marlin
A warm-water possibility capable of great size. Availability varies; tournament rules do not replace retention law.
Yellowfin tuna
A mobile schooling pelagic found from small school fish to uncommon large adults. Follow current bait and water.
Wahoo
A fast, sharp-toothed pelagic often emphasized from fall into winter. Handling and leader choices matter.
Boat Types
Panga or center console
Efficient and direct, but shade, head, dry storage, freeboard, and ride vary. Confirm the exact hull and safety equipment.
Cruiser or convertible
May add cabin space and a larger cockpit. Capacity labels do not describe fishable space or comfort in a swell.
Large sportfisher
Can provide greater range and amenities, with materially higher cost. Verify inclusions, fuel policy, and actual departure time.
Trip Durations
Short trip
Lower run-time budget. Ask which water is realistically reachable from the chosen marina in the advertised hours.
Three-quarter day
Adds search time and range. The departure point and sea conditions determine which banks are practical.
Full day
Provides more room to adapt. Confirm whether quoted hours are dock-to-dock and whether fuel surcharges apply.
Extended trip
Requires a vessel, crew, safety plan, and provisions suited to the range. Review the written itinerary.
Offshore Seasons
Use the seasonal guide to choose likely targets, then check recent fleet reports, water conditions and the captain's plan before departure.
Weather & Seasickness
Wind direction, swell period, local wind waves, and the chosen route can create very different rides on the same day. A land forecast or a label such as “Pacific side” is not enough; ask the captain for a marine-conditions call.
