Wahoo
The fastest fish in Cabo waters. Wahoo are nicknamed 'onidad' locally; their lightning runs and razor-sharp teeth make every encounter unforgettable.
Overview
Wahoo (Acanthocybium solandri) are the drag-scorching rockets of the Los Cabos fishing grounds. Built for pure speed with razor-sharp teeth and a body designed for hydrodynamic perfection, they're one of the most exciting fish you can catch.
In Los Cabos, Wahoo are present year-round but most abundant from October through May. Experienced captains target them specifically during peak months around structure and current breaks.
Physical Characteristics
Wahoo are unmistakable: long, slender, and built like fighter jets. They have iridescent blue-green backs with distinctive vertical silver-blue bars and a mouth lined with razor-sharp teeth.

Best Techniques
High-Speed Trolling
Trolled at 10-15 knots: the only fish you target by speeding up. Use horse ballyhoo or Braid Islanders.
Wire Leader
Non-negotiable. Wahoo teeth sever mono instantly. Use 6-12 ft of single-strand wire with crimped connections.
Wind-On Leader
Wind-on mono leader with live bait and short wire trace: gives more natural bait action.
Table Fare
Wahoo is prized as one of the best-eating fish in the ocean. The meat is pure white, firm, and flaky with a mild, sweet flavor, often compared to grouper or halibut. It's excellent grilled, blackened, or turned into ceviche. Because of its low oil content, it cooks quickly; be careful not to overcook it.
