Striped Marlin
The most commonly caught billfish in Los Cabos: known for spectacular aerial displays and the reason Cabo is called the 'Marlin Capital of the World.'
Overview
The Striped Marlin (Kajikia audax) is the signature catch of Cabo San Lucas and the primary reason this destination earned its reputation as the "Marlin Capital of the World." These magnificent billfish are known for their incredible speed, acrobatic leaps, and stubborn fights, making them one of the most sought-after game fish on the planet.
Striped Marlin are available year-round in Los Cabos waters, with peak season running from November through April. During winter months, the combination of cooler water temperatures (66-72°F) and abundant baitfish creates ideal conditions, and it's common for experienced boats to release multiple fish in a single day.
Physical Characteristics
Striped Marlin are easily identified by their distinctive high dorsal fin and striking blue-black coloration with vertical white stripes that become more prominent when the fish is excited. They have a long, slender bill and a powerful crescent-shaped tail.
Unlike their larger Blue Marlin cousins, Striped Marlin typically range from 100-200 pounds, making them more accessible for anglers of varying skill levels while still providing an exhilarating fight.

Purple/black, green/yellow, blue/white color combos. Use a spread of 4-6 lures.
Kite Fishing
Live bait suspended from a kite: keeps bait skimming the surface. Highly effective.
Conservation
Catch & Release
The Bisbee's Conservation Fund and other local organizations work to protect billfish populations. Most Cabo charter operators practice catch and release for all billfish; it's part of the fishing culture here.
