Overview

Roosterfish (Nematistius pectoralis) are the crown jewel of nearshore sportfishing in the Eastern Pacific. They're named for the spectacular "comb" or "rooster" of seven elongated dorsal spines, a feature that makes them one of the most distinctive fish on the planet. Found exclusively from Baja California to Peru.

Unlike offshore species, Roosterfish are a surf-zone predator. They patrol beaches and rocky shorelines in water less than 10 feet deep, making them uniquely accessible to anglers fishing from the beach or in small pangas close to shore.

Physical Characteristics

Seven very long, filamentous dorsal spines extend from the back, resembling the comb of a rooster. The body is compressed and deep, with blue-green to silvery-bronze coloration and a distinct dark lateral stripe.

The IGFA All-Tackle world record is 114 pounds, caught in La Paz. In Cabo, fish 10-40 pounds are common.

Best Seasons for Roosterfish

Roosterfish are present year-round but are most active from February through June when water temperatures range from 68-78Β°F and baitfish are abundant in the surf zone. Summer can still produce good action, particularly in early morning. Fall and early winter can be slower, though fish can be found on the right tides.

Catch & Release

Roosterfish are not a premier food fish; their value as a sportfish far exceeds their table quality. Most Los Cabos anglers practice catch and release. Circle hooks, proper handling (support the fish horizontally), and minimal air exposure are essential for healthy release.
