Wahoo, known locally as “onidad”, are the drag-scorching rockets of the Los Cabos fishing grounds. Built for pure speed with razor-sharp teeth and a body designed for hydrodynamic perfection, they’re one of the most exciting fish you can catch in Cabo.
Why Wahoo Are Different
Unlike marlin and tuna, which can be targeted with a variety of techniques, Wahoo require specialized approaches. Their incredible speed (60+ mph) and toothy mouths mean you need heavy-duty tackle, wire leaders, and the willingness to troll faster than you would for any other species.

Top Wahoo Spots
- Golden Gate Bank: One of the top Wahoo spots in Cabo. Excellent structure for holding fish.
- Gordo Banks: Consistent producer year-round, best in winter.
- San Jaime Bank: Good for trophy-sized fish.
- Iman Bank: Less boat pressure than other spots.
- Finger Bank: Known for high-volume days when conditions align.
- 1150 Bank: Deeper water, usually larger fish.
The Technique: High-Speed Trolling
Wahoo are unique among Cabo’s game fish because you target them by speeding up. While marlin and tuna are trolled at 5-7 knots, Wahoo lures are trolled at 10-15 knots. The rapid movement triggers their predatory instincts; the lure looks like a fleeing baitfish and Wahoo can’t resist.
Lure Selection: Use Wahoo-specific lures like Braid Islanders, Moldcraft Wide Ranges, or horse ballyhoo rigged with wire. Bright colors work well: pink, chartreuse, orange, and red/white combinations.
Wire Leader is Non-Negotiable: Wahoo’s razor-sharp teeth will cut through monofilament or fluorocarbon instantly. Always use a 6-12 foot section of single-strand wire leader (7-strand or 49-strand) with properly crimped connections. A poorly crimped wire is worse than no wire at all.
Tips for Success
- Speed Matters: If your boat can’t maintain 10-12 knots in sea conditions, you’re not going to catch Wahoo.
- Watch for Structure: Wahoo hold on the edges of banks and current breaks. They’re ambush predators.
- Daisy Chains: Use a “daisy chain” of small lures ahead of the main lure to attract attention.
- Handle with Care: Wahoo have incredibly sharp teeth. Use a gaff and keep hands clear of the mouth.
- Eat Well: Wahoo is one of the best-eating fish in the ocean: firm white flesh, mild flavor, excellent grilled or blackened.
