Spring in Los Cabos marks a transition period that offers some of the most consistent marlin fishing of the year. As winter waters slowly warm, Striped Marlin remain abundant while Blue Marlin begin to appear.
Why Spring is Prime Time for Striped Marlin
From March through May, Striped Marlin are in peak season with excellent catch rates. Water temperatures range from 68-75°F, creating ideal conditions for these acrobatic game fish.
The spring bite is known for being especially active, with fish feeding aggressively after the winter months. Many experienced anglers consider spring the best time for light-tackle marlin fishing.
Techniques That Work in Spring
Trolling with Live Bait: Live caballito (mackerel) remains the most effective bait for Striped Marlin. Troll them at 5-7 knots near temperature breaks.
Lure Trolling: Purple and black, green and yellow, or blue and white lures work well in spring’s clear water conditions.
Kite Fishing: Popular for Blue Marlin, which become more active as water temperatures climb above 72°F.
Hot Spots for Spring Fishing
- Gordo Banks: The most productive offshore structure for Marlin
- San Jamie Bank: Productive for Striped Marlin
- Iman Bank: Excellent for both Striped and Blue Marlin
- Pacific Side: Productive early in the morning
What Else is Biting in Spring?
While spring is all about marlin, you’ll also find excellent Yellowfin Tuna action, especially by May. Wahoo fishing peaks in March and April, providing fast-paced action between marlin bites.
